Distorted ABC HDTV broadcast

Hi,
Our local ABC station started their digital and HDTV broadcast recently.
Both with an off-air antenna as well as through cable, the HDTV broadcast
looks like a 4:3 broadcast stretched sideways to fill a 16:9 screen, rather
than a well balanced 16:9 picture. The TV anchors all look like they need to
go on a diet! All other HDTV broadcasts I've seen look fine (except for TNT
on Dish Network, where I have to often adjust the zoom on the dish
receiver). With an HDTV input, you can't do any zoom on the TV itself, and
our cable box does not have any zoom capability.
Anyone else had a problem with ABC broadcasts? The non-HD digital broadcast
is OK, though not spectacularly better than the old analog ABC cable
broadcast. All this hooha about digital is disappointing to some extent. Ah
well, at least Showtime HD and Discovery HD are of excellent quality.

I notice on a HD TV when receiving SD ED or HD that there is no video
ringing after sharp edges. There is no snow and no noise in the background.
That makes the picture perfect. Higher quality images depend on content.

I get our local ABC via OTA. (KOMO - Seattle)
They seem to have MANY problems.
NYPD almost always lost sound for up to 10 minutes during each show.
The OU/USC game had multiple cut-outs during parts of the game.
Alias season premier had many sound cut outs and freezes.

The other stations do not seem to have these problems as much.

NBC affilliate, however, seems to forget to switch to HD often.

If you're watching ABC news broadcasts then they're not in HD -
it's digital SD and yes they stretch it a bit to help fill the screen
on the sides. Just because you're watching an HD channel doesn't
necessarily mean the program is in HD and none of the networks
are broadcasting any news programming in HD at all. It's all SD.

I do wish they'd keep it OAR though. (Richard C. is probably rolling his
eyes at that one. <g>) but, short, squat people are not an improvement IMHO.

I have this same problem with ABC 7 in Chicago through Comcast HD tuner on
my Samsung DLP HDTV. I've read similar complaints, but no fix. I've
meailed ABC network and station and never received any response at all.

I guess they don't care if I avoid their station since it doesn't come in HD
properly. I've even stopped watching ABC news since it is so irritating and
such with the other networks.
