What do you use for ripping the DVD? I recommend SmartRipper. After you rip the DVD, can you watch the movie with PowerDVD or WinDVD? Maybe there is a problem with ripping process.
Also, not all encoders work fine on all systems. Its strange to note that, Xmpeg doesn't work on my system whereas Flask works perfectly. All the settings are same in both encoders. Funny ha?
Anyway, FairUse is nice, as lakedude mentioned. However there is a small problem with FairUse (in fact there are two).
1) Sound must be mixed seperately.
2) It takes ages for encoding. On my system (1.1GHz Athlon) a regular movie takes 5-6 hours to encode with Flask + Divx4.12. If I use FairUse, it takes about 13 hours. Now thats LONG!!!
Personally, I don't use second pass encoding. From experience I saw that quality based encoding, with quality set to 90-95, ends up with an AVI of 1.3GB in size. So I can burn it into two CDs (I always use double CDs, so no problem here).
