If you have a modem/router combo, then yes, you can get rid of your router. If you are using Ethernet, your modem will have to have enough ports for the laptops. If it doesn't, you can use an Ethernet switch.
If your "super firewalled home wifi" is a router - which I am assuming, then you can ditch the router. Although you can keep it and use the ports as a switch to hook up additional computers

If he has just a basic modem, don't thint it will work to just have modem + switch. Pretty sure you still need a router in there if you have multiple devices connecting to the Internet.
