Free Comodo Antivirus from the same folks that makes the firewall.
It works great & not too pushy once trained.

I also use Windows MRT.exe as a secondary av scanner.

I also use the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ABE ad blocker, Disconnect, Flash Blocker, cCleaner & lots of common sense 8)

TIP: Don't click links mindlessly - see if the domain looks fishy!.

If you like chrome - use Comodo Dragon instead; it's lot more secure & private than the standard google spyware version.

Comodo also has a FireFox based Comodo IceDragon too.

I´m a newbiie but about this issue I can contribute.I live in Brazil , the country that responds for " only" 41% of ciber atacks in the World , so this subject is about " survive" .Specialists says that Malware Antimalware ( paid version) is the best to companies and to home user´s too.I use it and it block lots of malicious sites ( the 2014 version works on line) .I cvan also say that I tried Avast ( free and paid) , Avira and Bitdefender and them didn´t found viruses that Malware ( free) find.Another advantage , looks like you aren´t running a antiviruses , is very light.

I've used Dragon a few times, and I wasn't impressed. Iron is a much better build, in my opinion, and Aviator is definitely one of the best (if not the best) available.

Comodo's AV also yields far too many false positives for me. I ran it for a while, but I never really trusted anything it flagged as malicious; there's was only once when it didn't give me a false positive, and that was because of me being lazy, and barebacking an infected computer to help fix it lol. The firewall is great, but their AV sucks, compared to most others. I'd rather use Avast over Comodo... and I don't like Avast...

Most of that extra stuff is just fluff, and the only people who "need" it are the ones who use their AV software as a last line of defence (which is a bad idea). It's a bitter sweet thing, but it's really just a selling point for those who are heavily inexperienced, and it is typically a paranoid feature for those who are either extremely lazy with security, or for the people who really have no idea what they are doing. Until I can see a real demonstration on just how effective these "features" are, I will continue to call it fluff, and nothing more.

You always recommend Norton, and I keep asking you to explain why... I just haven't found anything that makes me think they are a company you should trust. Are you going to answer me this time? :p

So you disabled the included/integrated Windows Defender within Windows 8, feeling it better to go 'Digital Commando'? :)

After using just MSSE/Defender firewall and having no infections whatsoever (I really only visit perhaps 25-30 trusted techie/news/firearms-related websites routinely), I recently have begun testing 360 TS, and, Personal Firewall.....; so far, I like this combo!

360 TS seems to be pretty nice. Can't say I like the company very much, but the independent reviews published say it works pretty well. Definitely much better than MSE, too. The only thing I don't like is it failed to quarantine text file viruses automatically, and I had to scan it manually for it to get flagged... that gives me some unease. Should be good for you, though ;)

Most all the malware is designed for windows computers. Linux based OS's are pretty safe. I fiddle around some with Linux Mint 17 with the Cinnamon desktop. I like it because it works great and it's free.

If someone only needs to protect one computer, then this is what I would spring for. If you need more than one computer protected, and you don't mind a slightly more paranoid AV suite, then the Kaspersky deal would be okay.

If you want to wait for another sale, you can. I don't know how often they offer those kinds of sales, but it shouldn't be more than a couple months before something nice pops up. I don't see anything nice on Newegg, right now, so keep an eye out. I'd say to check the <$10 area daily, on your lunch breaks. You never know what might pop up.

With Linux, the "need" for an AV is more of a subjective thing. If you aren't one of those people who types in their root password any time they are asked for it, then you should be fine without one. There are ways to get around administrative authentication, but I'm not aware of any malicious threats that exploit these methods. Like I said, it is possible to do, but the likelihood of some kid writing a virus like that is slim.

There are AV solutions for Linux users, but I haven't had a Linux box in just over 5 years... so can't help you there.
