Drive where Windows is installed is locked - Trying to upgrade to Windows 10

I'm trying to upgrade my pc from windows 8.1 to windows 10. The installation of windows 10 always gets to 90 something percent complete then stops and says something has happened windows 10 has failed to install.

So i got advice to just clean install windows 8.1 again and try to upgrade to windows 10 from that. Now when i try to run the windows cd and choose reset the pc it says the drive where windows is installed is locked, unlock it and try again. This is truly driving me pretty insane. thanks for any help. at this point i'd pay someone via paypal to just help me sort this whole thing out so i can get windows 10 on my pc and can start using my twitch stream.
