DVD recorder or Home theater PC?

I am contemplating building a home theater PC, but then again it may be easier to just go out and buy a DVD recorder. Does anyone know if DVD recorders put encryption into their recording off a live feed?

Can't speak to a DVD recorder, but an HTPC does not strip the encryption from a cable feed. Anything recorded that is protected cannot be moved from the HTPC.
