Progressive scan isn't a feature that can be added by a simple firmware
update. If the player isn't built with a deinterlacing chip inside, it
can't do the work. I can't read Japanese, but I'd have to assume that
the press release you link to offers buyers a physical hardware upgrade,
if anything.
This hardly seems worth the effort, anyway. Even if it were possible,
until very recently the deinterlacing chips Pioneer used in its
progressive DVD players were notoriously the worst on the market.
Whatever is built into your TV, if it has any degree of motion-adaptive
processing at all, is probably better. Even aside from progressive scan,
the DVD section in the 909 is a lousy first-generation unit that can be
outperformed by any $60 DVD player you pick up these days.
