Dedicated vs Combo Player

I am interested in buying an LD player but I am not sure whether or not
I should buy a newer DVD/LD player such as Pioneer DVL-919 or an older
but dedicated Laser Disc player. Does the LD picture and sound quality
of a combo player just as good as a dedicated LD player?

Thanks so much Joshua for your speedy answer!

I already have a DVD player for the PC and I actually have very few
Laser Disc movies, all of them are old Japanese robot anime made in the
seventies or eighties. They are not available in DVD format.

My plan is to buy a good LD player that can take advantage of all the
features of my old anime, and then buy a separate DVD recorder so I can
transfer my anime to DVD without losing any quality.

The box of my Japanese anime said CLV, Mono, Digital Audio, and
Multiple Audio (something like that).

Which LD player and DVD recorder would you recommend for this purpose?
I am currently eyeing on Pioneer CLD-E2000. They are sold as brand new
in Ebay for 100 bucks, which I consider a very good deal. Is this model
good enough to take advantage of all the features of my old anime or
should I look for another model?

The combo players were built for convenience, not performance. Would you
ever use the DVD portion of a combo player?

Buy a dedicated player.

Its really dependent on your LD collection, what you are playing the
audio through and how you are displaying the video. For most people the
DVL-919 would be more than enough. It offers analog, digital PCM and
AC-3 (dolby digital) via rca, coxial and optical connections. It allow
offers composite and S-Video output. It can play CDRs, CDs, and DVDs
(with the latter being display out through component output). It also
can flip sides in about 3-4 seconds.

For a stand alone, I believe most people would recommend the CLD-D704.

OK, one man's opinion (going back to 1979). The 919 is overrated for LD
playback. For a DVL player go for the 909. Same LD playback as the DVL-700
(which looks good to "my eye"). The 919 changed LD circuitry. The 909 will
do DVD-R, and with an upgrade will output V-DNR and DTS DVD audio as the
DVL-91. A 909 can be had for less than a 919, and (again, my opinion) has a
better LD picture. Same outputs as the 919.
I will agree, for LD only, the 704 seems to be the "preferred" player for
the money...

I believe the E200 is a single-sided player. If most of your discs are
half-hour anime, that may not be a big deal.
