Earbud mic won't work on my desktop

So I have earbuds with a built in mic. I know that you need to plug in the earbuds to the microphone jack which I did. My PC registers that it's a mic, but for some odd reason,, it won't pick up anything other than the volume control slider for the volume of the ear buds

1. right-click audio icon (playback devices) in lower right

2. recording

3. choose the correct microphone and save

4. click "configure" and run setup in the new window
