Error 3 (STHIVE #0)

Hello,

I am getting this "error 3" on a friends laptop. I have been trying to fix this using my laptop to make recovery discs, however the CD/DVD Rom will not boot during startup. I allready changed the boot lineup. But it still tries to boot normally.

The laptop is a Pavilion dv9500, with VISTA. I do not have a Windows disc to reinstall with, or the exact Recovery disc to boot with. Without having to buy a Windows Vista CD, is there any other way around this?

quick answer

power on, keep pressing f11 repeatly let it load
then select "factory restore" its easier than using a cd

I've done that several times with the same result. I'm not getting any where.
