Ethernet port seems broken

(Sorry for my bad English by the way) So I've been having this Alienware 17 gaming laptop for 2 years and I had no trouble with Ethernet connection until now. I think the reason is with the Ethernet port because the Ethernet connection works when I push really hard on the Ethernet cable.

If you have to manipulate it to get it to work, then either the port is damaged and needs replacing, the cable is damaged and needs to be replaced, or both of them do.

Make sure it's not your cable. It's more common that these end up damaged or malfunctioning than the port. If it turns out to be the port, there's no easy fix for it.

Will that be as fast as plugging the ethernet cabe straight into your laptop/PC?

It's not as fast if your Ethernet controller supports 10/100/1000 speeds. USB data transfer rates are a little slower and less consistent.
