So, I got an EVO 4G about 2 months ago, and when I first got it I was excited to use the hotspot feature. At the time, I couldn't get it to work, but was so busy that I didn't have time to go to the Sprint store to ask details. After a quick search on the internet, I have found many articles stating that the hotspot feature must be paid for in addition to the extra money I am paying for 4G access. These articles, however, are all dated from when the EVO first came out.

Do I need to pay extra to create a hotspot without rooting my phone? If not, how? If so, what are the pros/cons of rooting?

Thanks in advance,
Harvey

Rooting you phone is only breake your phone security, i have a Evo too and rooted a long time ago, why? i use that propertie for many purpuses like this:
- Complete backups of my entire system
- Use custom hospot app from market (wireless tether for root users)
- I use custom version of Evo ROM, because is full of modified stuffs
- I a complete minicomputer, i can use that to make a lot o things

I recommend you do that, if you want your guarantee back just restore to stock, is just a next next process, only download the correct .exe of the htc evo rom, i did that 2 times, is easy but you need read before anything.
