Recently I have been having severe hard drive related slowdowns and have tracked the problem back to Google Chrome. After uninstalling Chrome the problems seemed to go away. Now after re-installing they are back, but Google Chrome does not show up under Installed Programs, leading me to believe something is masquerading as Chrome.

Try to install malwarebytes and run it http://www.malwarebytes.org/

If all else fails the best thing to do is backup your data and reformat your computer.

Install free Avast Antivirus after you reinstall

Malwarebytes didn't come up with anything and neither has Mcafee.
