File not supported when trying to watch files on tv.

I have a toshiba external hard drive that has worked perfectly through my lg tv until now! I have always downloaded through my laptop onto the hard drive.
Today I did the same I added a couple of episodes and a movie to the hard drive and now when I plug it into the tv it is recognised, all the files are still there but when I try to play them I have the message "file not supported" shows up!
Hopefully there's something I can do to fix this?????

The file you downloaded is not supported by the televisions codecs, you can try some free conversion utilities to convert the video to a different one.

I have a lot of files on this hard drive, from before today and none of them will play they all say file not supported but worked fine before never had a problem. I'm thinking this is fixable! How do I convert the videos?
