Finally activated Tivo without phone

Thanks to all those that gave me some valuable input on how how to do
this. I'm hoping this is a one time thing. I bought a wired USB router
and hooked it up used the ,#401 and it worked perfectly. Now that it's
registered its ok if I can return the wired one back to Best Buy right?
Would I ever need this again?

If you're planning on using wireless, then I would go ahead and set it
up using the wireless adapter first just to be safe. But once you've
got that working there should be no reason to keep the wired adapter,
the wireless adapter can do all the same things except initial guided setup.

Just don't re-run guided setup again ;-).

Best Buy is not a rental company. You cannot (..well..should not) return
something just because "you only needed it once".

Once upon a time (after listening to the millionth person mention to me he
was going to buy a notebook, use it over the weekend, and return it) I
thought of a cool business. Rental notebooks. One good place for outlets
would be in airports, so you could rent one for your flight. With enough
locations, you could easily arrange for a pick it up here, drop it off
there method like U-haul and auto rentals do.

But then my idea was shattered by reality, when the thought crossed my mind
that the same scumbags who do this to Best Buy would have no problem
stealing my equipment.

So? You have a valid credit card that was given to rent the equipment,
charge the card for replacement.

FWIW, BB is certainly not the epitome of an upstanding business WRT the
damn protection plans they push on EVERY item, including a $15 mouse! I
have had mixed success with them honoring such things. For a $100 item,
no sweat but a $1000 notebook is another story entirely.

Assuming you were referring to notebook computers, who would provide
software applications needed on a "weekend" computer? People who use
laptop computers on aircraft have spent more time customizing the computer
than the average flight would take. Some businesses have computer techs
who do application installations and the user has minimal knowledge of such things.

I think that's very valid. The flipside application is a portable DVD
player, which would need essentially no customization. I see these
rented in airports for flights everywhere now. At a suprisingly
reasonable rate at that!

If he's already willing to use archaic technology like Tivo instead of
a cable DVR then non-stop bitching by Tivo shouldn't bother him too
much.

I use a wireless adapter. It never complains that it needs to make a
phone call. Once you've got it set up, it will just use your wireless
broadband connection.
