My wife's Toshiba Laptop Satellite c55t a5222
was working normally last night and today she has to press the Fn key to change the volume. It is acting like there is a Fn lock on or something. I can't seem to find any help on Google, so I figured I'd ask some experts. The Toshiba help page is extremely frustrating. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but my experience on this site has been very positive this far.

Thanks for the help in advance

Solution
Here is the solution I found on another website...

(0) Save all your open documents and stuff and close their respective programs

(1) Navigate to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Toshiba\System Setting

(2) Double-click on the "System Settings.exe"

(3) Scroll down in the left menu until you find "keyboard"

(4) Click on the "keyboard" menu option and change the default "special function mode" to "normal f1-f12"

(5) Click the "apply" button and allow your computer to restart.

All done!!
Thank you for the quick response... but no joy...
It does not seem to do anything.

Weird problem... any other ideas?

Not devastating but irritating.

I found ideas like restore original defaults.(NO Thank you!) Somehow this problem was created easily so it seems it shouldn't be this hard to fix.

Thanks again for the effort.

Holding it for 10 seconds does work. I tried it myself and it worked fine. Don't forget, when counting to 10, go 1,1.. 2,2.. 3,3.. and so on at a slow & steady pace. Try doing so from the desktop. If need be, try it by having the TOSHIBA Function Key application open when doing the counting while holding the Fn key.

I had the same problem. I'm running windows 8. if you search the computer for "function key" it will give you a result click on that and switch the enabled to on.

when I search function key I get the following:

TOSHIBA Function Key enables functions when pressing specific keys or in combination with Fn. Some functions show the toast notification at the edge of the screen. These settings turn on/off notifications.

then it says
Status Notification
Touch Pad enabled On

clicking the Notification changes it to off and does nothing..

that is all I get when searching Function key

Thank you for your help though.
I appreciate it.

I am with you Mr Roberts. Suffering exactly the same problem and none of the above working. Frustrating because I must have just hit some key combination accidentally but can't work it out to reverse it...
