Formatting problem acer laptop

I am trying to format my laptop, its got vista at the moment and i am wanting to put format and put xp on, Now when i put the xp disk in and boot it the disc loads ect "press enter to continue" and then i get an error saying there is no hard drive installed :S
But the laptop works fine i am just unable to format can any one help?

And the XP disc works i did my PC last month.

Hi i had this problem with my laptop in the end i got a usb floppy and booted up using floppy drive as you use to do then formated the hard drive or you can download vista format put it on a disc mak sure its iso so it will boot on start up

I've always found that it's the windows xp operating system that can be the main cause of problems with computers. I used to have a laptop that would always have problems with the sound card. When I later upgraded it to Windows vista, the problems disappeared. Thank you for sharing. :)
