Freeze on configuring

When my hubby switches on his Acer Aspire laptop all he gets is 'Configuring updates 0%' which then changes to 'Configuring updates 100%' and there it remains. No Start up menu.. nothing. He's tried waiting an hour, switching off then on again, Escape.. F2 F8 and F10. Nothing works at all. Any suggestions anyone?

Windows Vista.. he's overcome the problem in the last 5 minutes! He went onto F8 which then allowed him into the system tools menu, onto system restore then the recommended restore date. After a few minutes his icons appeared on the screen! Jubilations all around.. no more mithering man about the house! This is an excellent site by the way. Many thanks to the forums.

Good! System restore points sure do come in handy; I'm glad he had one to fall back on.
