Looks like those once pricey Frighteners laserdisc box sets will lose a lot
of their resale value now that a decent extras-laden director's cut is
finally coming to dvd at the end of November. Obviously the dvd won't have
the full 10+ hours worth of bonus material that the LD set has, but it will
certainly have an effect of bringing the prices down to a reasonable level
for people unloading their sets on ebay. It would be nice to finally get the
LD box for less than $75.00.

What are you basing this comment on? I have been watching for any
'Frighteners' news on DVDtalk, DavisDVD, and theDigitalBits, as well as
sites like dvdanswers and dvdjournal. NONE of these sites have, as of
yet, any *specific* specs on the supplements for this release. If you
have other info about the LD/DVD comparison, plz let us know.

The blurb on DavisDVD ~

Universal Studios has added the wording "includes over four hours of
bonus material written and produced by Peter Jackson" to their listing
of The Frighteners Director's Cut. Does this mean the DVD will include
the complete documentary from the laserdisc box set? Very possible.
There will be enough room on the DVD-18 (dual-layered, dual-sided) for
the film and the documentary. However, if Universal counts the two-hour
commentary track as part of the bonus materials, the documentary may be
split in half. It's certainly happened before (*cough* Jaws), so it may
be the case again. We'll just have to wait for an official notice soon.

This is exactly what I copied and pasted from davisdvd. In other
words, they don't know what the specific supplements will be.

You have to read the article carefully to spot the info. It's just below the
King Kong vs Godzilla dvd info.

Although it may not get us any closer to a definitive answer, the
following was just posted at dvdanswers.com ~

http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=0&s=1&c=7360&n=1&burl=

I pasted what they have ~

"Universal has announced a director's cut release of The Frighteners
which stars Michael J. Fox, Trini Alvarado, John Astin and Jeffrey
Combs. This single-disc special edition will be available to own from
the 29th November this year, and should set you back around $26.98. The
film itself will have a runtime of 2 hours and 3 minutes, and will be
presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround track. As for the extra material, you can expect
the set to include over four hours of material, including a commentary
with Director Peter Jackson, a Making of The Frighteners documentary,
storyboards, and the theatrical trailer."

This says 'over four hours of extra material.' Does this mean the
entire LD documentary from the box set?????

Here is the back of the LD box for reference ~

I am cautiously optimistic that they are, in fact, including everything
from the LD box set. I am hoping, when they say 'over four hours',
they are not counting the film commentary and are, in fact, including
the complete 4.5 hour documentary.

Generally, when DVD marketing people quote run times for supplements,
they do include the audio commentary in that. I would expect the disc to
have a commentary plus 2 hours of video supplements. Factor out about
15-20 minutes for an EPK featurette, and another 5-10 minutes for
multiple trailers and TV spots, and you've got about an hour and half
for a condensed version of the documentary.
