Getting the most out of my headphones while gaming

I recently bought ATH-AD700's off of newegg (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16826402014)

for gaming of course,

I want to configure my system with them for mw2

is it as simple as just plugging them in? or are there some things i should tweak for optimal performance?
in the game and on my system

my motherboard is Asus P5QC (has built in realtek HD audio)
Im wondering should i plug them into the front panel port? i usually get static/popping/squealing
or put them in the back port where my speakers are.

how can i get 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound on them?

well u can get a soundcard with dolby headphone support.

that will allow you to get 5.1 surround sound... well its still virtual, but of course it is
