Hi, I am looking for a nice, inexpensive machine for my daughter. She is going into her sophomore year doing a major in film and video production. A mac would be good for Final Cut Pro, but they are crazy expensive for a souped up machine. Alternative is Avid or Adobe software on a PC. would be grateful thoughts from the community. Thanks!

These two should be solid choices for video editing laptops. If you go the desktop route, you can get more performance, but you lose the portability aspect.

Basically when you're looking for a video editing machine, you want a top tier processor, graphics card, a fast hdd or ssd, and at least 8 gigs of ram (preferably 16 gigs).

Are you looking for a desktop or a laptop? Also at what price-point?

this is one area where you can't skimp on hardware - if you do, she suffers in class for not being able to keep up, aside from being frustrated things take so long in the first place

a laptop will cost $2K with specs decent enough to last some time (2 years?) - bite the bullet and invest in her future - a desktop should run no less than $1300
