Good VHS to DVD or Digital Software.

Any recommendations? Specifically for windows 7. I already have a capture card but it was a cheap one on ebay. My problem with the included software and/or hardware was not being able to get sound during recording as I could only sound during direct playback. I see most online have pretty crappy reviews so if anyone has any tips on anything to make this process easy and effective they would be much appreciated. Free would be best but if we can keep it under a total cost of $100 for software and hardware combined that would help a lot as well.
