I have a hp probook 4400 G1 with 512 GB SSD.. can I add an external HDD

Portable, yes. Via usb.

externals are not controlled by any way. you can connect as many as laptop can handle ( I think 8 ?) might be more, never tried.
if you meant second INTERNAL drive then YES you can inside DVD bay.
