HDMI cable doesnt work when plugged into multiple consoles and tv

When I plug an hdmi cable into two or more video game consoles, the sound doesnt work. It only works if it's only got one plugged in. I have a multi-hdmi cable which allows for Nintendo, Xbox 360 and PS3 systems to hook up simultaneously. Unfortunately, to reitterate, the sound doesnt work if two or more are hooked together. I dont know why.

Not sure what you mean by multi-hdmi cable.
To connect three consoles to one HDMI input you would need an HDMI input selector. There are some that will switch automatically when a console is turned on.

If i have a PS3 running and connected, an xbox 360 component connected but turned off and a Wii connected but turned off, the ps3 will function without sound. If i unplug all but the PS3, the sound returns. I cannot have more than one video game console connected and have sound. THAT is my question. Why do i have to have only one connected...?

One HDMI on tv is dvi the other won't run sound to devices needing dvi such as laptop.

You may be able to use a usb multiport cable and connect all to HDMI 1 typically.
