Hdmi splitter causes wavy lines in picture

I have a JVC LCD 720P tv (approx 4 yrs old ?) the has one HDMI port. I thought I would try and attach an HDMI spiltter so I could hook up both my DVD player and XBox to one connection. However when I hook it up either / both devices have wavy lines across the screen that seem to almost pulsate and look really bad. Anything I can do ? Am I using the wrong device ?
BTW the only reason I'm not just using the XBox for DVDs is it's my son's and comes and goes with him and my DVD player is hooked up to my Surround sound system so I'd like to have both connected. Any ideas and help are really appreciated !!!

not sure what "splitter" you are using but that might be part of the problem.

I would tend to use a "switch" as opposed to a "splitter", which may be what you are using, just we are using different terminology.

If I needed more HDMI inputs, I would tend to use something like this

or if on a tight budget, this one is probably more affordable...
