Headset causing loss in sound, requires restart

Ok, I had been using USB headsets for the past few years but decided to get these new ones (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Op...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1278901768&sr=1-1) which use jacks instead.

Randomly I will lose all sound and and sometimes sound will loop a screeching noise until I restart my computer. I didn't have this problem previously when I used a USB headset, so I assume the problem has to deal with my new headset.

Extra info: The volume slider freezes and restarting it does nothing. So far the only fix for it is restarting my computer, but this takes forever because it's hard to close all the programs.

If there are any quick fixes (such as closing a certain program or application and then restarting it) or a fix for this problem please let me know.

Also, I'm not sure if this is the right category, I haven't used these boards that often :/.
