Help please toshiba keyboard

I'm unable to log in to my toshiba laptop due to the keyboard displaying odd symbols. When I press the r key I get a trademark symbol. And some keys produce symbols I dont even know. Help

Make sure you fn key is not pressed down or other keys like num lock. Check other keys and then try an external keyboard plug it into a USB port on boot up.
