I do watch VCR that way, bacuase it's easier on the tapes
(stopping/starting tape can physically damage it, as well as cause
problrems with the recording). I do this with DVD only when copying
it, since DVD controls are ALREADY good.
VCRs do not use S-video and there are 2 inputs. Anyway, I use
composite, since the connector itself fits better. The slight
improvement of S-video isn't worth the reduced reliability.
When I got DirecTV, I started with S-video then got tired of all the
failed automatic recordings because the connector came loose.
