Help with Sony 605

Howdy all, been lurking for a while now, and now I have a problem. Have a
MDP-605 (not the best, I know, but it's been a good workhorse) and at first
the tracking seemed to go, now it's gotten progressivly worse to the point
where LD's (sacrificial only) won't even play. It spins up, but it's like
the LD almost 'slips' and bangs around. Diagnosis? Repair tips? or even
better, an on-line d/l of a tech manual? I'm not afraid to get my hands
dirty and rip the machine apart to repair it.

Any help would be appreciated!

The optical pickup might need a recalibration or, worse yet, may have seen the
end of its useful life. If this is the case, then your only option is
replacement with a Pioneer LD player.

Another thing you could do is check to see if the disc is slipping on the
spindle hub. - Reinhart

That's what I think the problem is. I opened up the player, and it seems
like the disc is slipping off the hub. Any tips on how to fix / replace?
It's a nice LD player, and since I use all sony equipment, it integrates
nicely with my setup.

Thanks!

Check the condition of the friction material on the spindle hub. This material
is all that's used to keep the disc gripped to the spindle when clamped down.

You may have to roughen and clean the friction surfaces to restore any lost
grip if replacement of the friction material is not practical. - Reinhart
