Hi,
as a longtime enthusiast of this ng. I often research the google
archives to learn info about various players and player issues.
I've come across much info to the effect that the comb filter design
of the Elite 99 is faulty.
The person who discovered this design flaw is Ivar from Norway.
The only thing I've been able to learn is that he owns some of the top
players, such as the Elite 97, Runco LJRII and Pioneer HLD X9.
He seems to be the originator of the theory that the 3D adaptive comb
filter in the Elite 99 was designed incorrectly by Pioneer techs.
All other references to this design flaw, cite Ivar as the source of
this info.
Does anyone know who Ivar is, other than an LD enthusiast from Norway?
I'm intrigued by him because he really seems to be the "lone gunman"
in regards to this infamous design flaw theory.
I thought it was amazing that Greg Rogers, when he reviewed the Elite
99, in the famous shootout between the Elite 97 and Elite 99, didn't
notice this defect, and, conversely, raved about the unit!
Any info would be appreciated! Is Ivar a Pioneer tech based in Norway?

Actually Ivar has an HLD-X0, not an HLD-X9, unless he bought one since the last
time he and I chatted. He stopped over in Silicon Valley about 6-7 years ago
on his way to a computer conference in Texas, and so we spent the day together
talking about these matters (and other stuff, too

He, like me, is passionate about taking things apart to see how they work and
my recollection is that he has at least one engineering degree (probably EE).

I have no reason to doubt his analyses and conclusions which I why I placed some
of his articles (previously posted to AVL) on one of my websites. FWIW, I have
archives of most of AVL (all articles) up to about 1999 or 2000 or so (when I
became involved with a new startup (and I'm still there) and haven't had much
free time to spend perusing Usenet and still persue other hobbies), and it'd be
kind of a pain to retrieve the full archives from tape(s). Been meaning to put
them on CDs, but ...

I haven't heard from him in awhile; I hope he's still doing fine. His email
address (don't know if it's still valid) should be in some of his articles which

which, sadly, I haven't had time to update in a number of years. I still have
the humongous LD collection (over 4,000 last time I counted) and 5 LD players
two of which still see regular use. The CLD-99 is no longer being used as a
doorstop (it's in its box as a "backup"), and both HLD-X9s and the CLD-D704
still work perfectly.

On a thread on avsforum he said something about having a HLD-X9 also now.
