How can I extract a frame from a video file and use it to create an icon for the video file

On my laptop I use VLC to play avi files and on my desktop I use WMP.

I want to be able to take a frame from my video and create an icon for the video using the frame I selected.

Can anyone help me do this?

You could take a screenshot. If you are using Windows then do the following after pausing the video:
1) Press the Print Screen key PrtScr
2) Open Paint and press Ctrl + V to paste the image into paint.
3) Edit and save

If you are using or have any video editing software the should be an option to export a frame as an image.
