How can i get rid of a black screen upon sign in? The cursor shows up but nothing else! Please help!

When I turn my Acer on it asks me to log in. I put in my password and it goes to a black screen. The cursor is the only thing on the screen. How can I fix this?

Was it working before? If yes then do a system recovery by restarting your system and pressing F8.

I tried the f8. Still a black screen when signing in. Even tried shutting down and trying f8 again. Won't go to the menu anymore.

Press F8 after boot, if you dont have any kind of message just simply spam F8 till that menu appear

Have you done anything with the hard drive recently? I had this happen on a cloned replacement drive and while it eventually boots it takes forever. Might be a permission issue, I am going to test later this week by giving "everyone" full access to the drive and see what happens.

There is a bit of malware that just came out that doesn't integrate well with Windows. The only answer I have for you is to download Combofix and ADWcleaner (get both from bleepingcomputer.com) from another computer to a USB stick and run those. When you get to the blank screen hit alt-ctrl-del then go to new task. From there you can select what you want to run. Combofix first. ADWcleaner after a reboot.
