how can I get rid of a high-pitched whine on my laptop?

Hello. I have a very reliable ASUS laptop. Today an annoying high-pitched whine began; it seems to be coming from the fan on the back of the unit. How do I get into the unit to have a look, and once I'm in, how do I stop this awful sound? Thank you. Beth
