how can I save my data files to a usb stick if the notebook won't boot up

my notebook will not run in safe mode and I'm ready to do a factory re-set but I'm told I will loose all my data files and that I should back them up to a usb stick because I don't have a cd\dvd tray. Can you tell me how I can transfer my data files to a usb stick.

Can you get a portable Linux to boot from USB? You might be able to access the disk that way.

You'll need to connect your laptop's hard drive to another computer, along with said USB stick. From there, the computer should see both devices and allow you to transfer data between them. You can get simple adapters that will allow you to do this; they're typically known as SATA/IDE to USB adapters.
