How Can I Split My Monitors' Sound?

I have a new dual monitor setup and would like to know how I can make sound come from each monitor separately. I currently run my monitors like this: Main monitor with hdmi to hdmi splitter, second monitor goes to a usb to vga converter. The hdmi splitter that the first monitor is plugged into also has the red and white audio in's, which I have my speakers and sub plugged into with a audio y splitter to 3.5mm jack. As I understand it, the only way to do this is if one of the programs you are attempting to use has an option to select and use an option in playback devices that is not set to default.
