How do I connect my laptop that only has VGA port and a projector that has a VGA or HDMI? I bought a cable that's VGA to HDMI

You want to make sure the VGA portion is the output while HDMI is the input. Also no the projector, change the source.

If your projector has a VGA input, why are you not using that? Just get a VGA cable to connect the two and call it a day.

You would need an active VGA to HDMI converter since a cable can't convert analog video to digital video.
