How do I get all symbols to work

I have an Acer Aspire 5551-2384. On y keyboard I have white letters to use, but there are also green markings on them. When I need to use the symbol for number I get the green stuff. I have this problem with the at symbol and the question mark. I have tried all the different function keys and still have no luck. What am I not getting. Please help!

Have you used the ordinary shift key?

Alternatively do you have the correct keyboard driver installed that correctly interprets a keypress and translates it into a character on screen?

Your keyboard might be set to the wrong language. For instance, if it's set to french, trying to get the @ symbol will give you " instead.
There's a little keyboard icon towards the right of the taskbar, where you can check which language it's set to.
