How do I plug Roku Streaming stick in to Vizio D48-d0 tv should I use bakc or Side HDMI port

Have one HDMI port on back and one on side which should I use?

Shouldn't make any difference. The stick will protrude from the HDMI input which might be an issue if it sticks out too far in back or can be seen when plugged into the side HDMI input.
Connecting in the rear input would also leave the side one open for sources you want to remove from the TV. Easier to do from the side input.
