How does it stack up to modern systems?

I have a very old component system namely the jvc ca-mxs4bk system.
I have considered buying a new system, however, my current system plays fairly good so i would like to know if anyone have had experience with this particular system (or the ca-mxs2) and if they can tell me how it would stack up against modern systems like it.

I wasn't able to find the instruction manual online so not sure if it has OPTICAL or HDMI connections and that is what I'd be looking for if I had that system. If it does have either of those check if you can send the signal directly from your Computer or DVD/Blu-Ray player to the Stereo. If so then your set since then you can play the sound signal of movies directly to it. Good Luck

That type of "mini system" isn't really made much anymore.
If you are looking for better sound quality there are certainly receiver - speaker packages that would be a vast improvement. Could also add sources like internet radio, music streaming services, music file playback, and control via phone or tablet,
It might be possible to just upgrade the speakers but the limited power of the JVC would be a factor.
How much you are looking to spend would be a big factor too. Take a look at this

Well i have a rca cable connected so i should be able to connect my pc to the stereo (pictures added)

"Højtaler" is speaker, ask for more translations if necessary (it's in Danish)

Seems to be 30 watts per channel into 8 ohms. So if you found a pair of speakers you liked that were 8 ohm and could play loud enough for you with 30 watts then that would be a reasonable upgrade to make.
Speaker efficiency is given a XXdb when played with 1 watt at 1meter from the speaker. The higher the number the less power is needed to play louder. Doesn't mean you will like the sound better though. It's best to listen to speakers before you buy them.
You can connect the analog output of your computer to the system but the audio quality will be superior if you used an outboard USB DAC.

I have discovered that the name of my speakers are jvc sp-mxc5bk, perhaps i should take my setup to the hi fi club to compare it to newer systems?

Hi, i own the same system, and it still serves me quite well. I recently added a Chromecast Audio to it, and it seems i can use it for quite a bit longer now, as it still sounds pretty good to my ears.
So be sure it's worth it buying a new system.

Just wondering when it will finally die though, as its over 25 years old now...
