How is my tablet being connected to WiFi without purchasing it

I got my son a used tablet. I factory reset it. It connected to wifi without me having WiFi. How is this even possible?

It is possible there is an open WiFi in your area. While everyone should secure and password protect theirs, sometimes people don't.
