How know if DVD player is outputting in Progressive Scan m..

Last night, I used component cables for the first time with my
low-end-but-Progressive-Scan Toshiba SD-3960 DVD player.

I can't figure out if the Toshiba is actually pumping out Progressive
Scan. The manual clearly shows what buttons to press on the remote, but
I don't see any change as I toggle--even though the player is stopped
at the time.

I'm wondering if it's perhaps typical for a DVD player to automatically
switch to Progressive Scan when used with component cables?

(Just had a thought: It may be possible to query the HDTV this is
connected to--to see if it says 480i or 480p.)

You have to be an elite videophile to see the difference. :) Kidding
aside, your idea about having your HDTV tell you is a good idea. I know
that mine does show the input that is connectecd. I would say that if your
DVD player is set to 480p, that is what is being output.

I'm assuming the DVD player doesn't light up an icon or anything on the
front panel when it is in progressive mode?

If not, nor if your HDTV displays what is coming in, then try this ---

View a scene in a DVD where there is quite of bit of text. (I.e., say the
"FBI Warning" scene.) View the same scene from what you think should be
480i and what should be 480p. At 480p, you should see a big difference with
text. The text will be much more definitive, without artificating around
it. Can you switch between the modes while in playback? That'll make it
even easier to see the difference.

If you have an hdtv, you won't see any difference. With a non-progressive
signal, the TV upgrades the 480i to 480p. With a 480p signal, it passes it
thru without alteration. Either way, what you see is 480p.
Hopefully you didn't pay extra for a progressive output DVD player.

Thanks, everyone. This is a low-end Toshiba DVD player with progressive
output--free after rebate and shipping awhile back, so I didn't pay
"extra" for the feature.

What do you think of the various upconverter DVD players? (e.g.,
Samsung DVD-HD841, Toshiba SD-5970, etc.) Do they make that big of a
difference? Does the improvement depend upon the source signal? Do
these players have any disadvantages? I'm using this with a Samsung DLP
HL-P5063W. I had heard that the Samsungs do some kind of upconversion
of their own; not sure if that's true or not.

My TV treats 480i component as a different "input" from 480p and 1080i
component (despite it being the same PHYSICAL connection) and it does
support querying. It's in the extra stuff under my remote's flip lid.

I don't think you are correct on this particular point. If you were, folks
who have a HDTV ready TV could use either a progressive scan or
non-progressive scan DVD player with identical picture quality. That
certainly doesn't conform to my results.

Another related point...using my HDTV DirecTivo, output can be toggled
(using the remote) to either 480i or 480p. The 480p picture is clearly and
decisively better. That wouldn't be the case if the signal were
automatically being upgraded to 480p. Do you agree?

I'm also with you on that. I can clearly see a difference between 480i and
480p on my HDTV -- especially with on screen text such as the "FBI Warning"
scene. (As I replied to the OP, he could take at look at that screen
between the two modes to see if there is a difference.) My HDTV even
momentarily displays what the input is and when switching to 480i, it states
"480i".

This is true if (a) the TV is equipped with "3:2 pulldown", which it
sounds like it is, and (b) the content on DVD is from a film source and
not from interlaced video cameras. If case (b) is false, then it's
possible the TV may do a better job of fake progressivization than the
player does, or vice versa, but the odds rather favor it looking about
the same either way. If case (a) is false, you should see an obvious
difference between interlaced and progressive output on still frames.

It will help if your TV does a bad job of converting 480-line video to
HD. Many HDTVs, especially older ones, tend to produce awful looking
blobby edges when playing 480i or 480p source material. Many others do
as good a job as an upconverting player will do, in which case it would
be a waste to pay for one.

Many TVs up the signal to 1080i.

It also depends on the quality of the chipset doing the conversion or
upconvert. In general (and here is where I generally get in trouble. :)
a 5000 dollar tv is going to have a better chipset than a 100 dollar
dvd player. In that case, and all other things being equal, I would
leave the dvd player set to 480i and let the TV do the converting.

Thanks. I "discovered" the Picture Performance Settings menu and then
enabled Progressive. Since that time, pressing the PROGRESSIVE button
on the remote does indeed toggle between modes--whether in Play or
Pause modes.

So far, I have yet to see any noticeable difference between the two
modes. Not sure if it's me, the content, the DVD player, or the HDTV.
Too many variables! ;^)

You didn't specify which model you are using, but my Toshiba SD-3950 has the
setup for aspect ratio and progressive scan selection under the Picture
Performance Settings menu. If Progressive is enabled in this setup option,
then the PROGRESSIVE button on the remote will allow you to toggle between
modes. Note: When "Enable" is set and you select the progressive output
signal, no video signals are output from the VIDEO OUT jack and the S VIDEO
OUT jack. So if you have PROGRESSIVE selected on this machine, you will only
get a signal from the component output.

You wouldn't see any difference on a static picture anyway ("player
stopped"), since either a progressive or interlaced scan of a still picture
would look the same. I would try a comparison on scenes with lots of motion.

Ooops, sorry, you did specify the model (3960), and it looks very similiar
to the 3950, so you should be able to tell if you are in "progressive" mode
if you do not get any signal out of the VIDEO OUT/S VIDEO jacks.
