How to add subtitles to film to play on LG TV via usb

I've downloaded a captain philips video file and got it to play on the USB but it doesn't have subtitles, I've been reading a few of the threads on here and managed to get hold of the srt subtitle file, which I've managed to get working with VLC player on the laptop, however when I put the usb in the TV it doesn't work, I've tried pressing the Subtitle button on the TV but that won't work either?

It's an LG LED TV, probably about 6 years old, not sure of the model of it

Yeah cos I have a USB, don't have a lead from the laptop to the TV and the battery doesn't work on laptop unless it's plugged in, I don't want leads all over the lounge
