Performing a factory reset on a phone is usually an operation of last resort. It wipes all personal information and data from the phone and returns it to the same condition it arrived with in the box. Unfortunately, a factory reset is occasionally necessary when troubleshooting an issue with the phone and can be unavoidable. Fortunately, it’s easy to restore contacts after a factory reset on the Galaxy S7.
That is, as long as you set backups beforehand…
Android Marshmallow has many backup and sync options enabled by default but it’s best to check them all as soon as you get the phone.
1. Navigate to Settings and then Backup & reset.
2. Select Back up my data and make sure the toggle is set to On.
3. Check the backup account is correct and that Automatic restore is toggled on.
Once sync is complete and you have saved what you need to save, you can perform a factory reset. Once completed, your contacts will be automatically restored once you set up your Gmail account on the phone.
You can also backup your contacts on a computer before the reset and restore them manually.
1. Navigate to the Calls app and select Contacts.
2. Tap the three dots in the top right.
3. Select Export to .vcf file.
4. Choose a location to save the file, off the phone.
5. Perform the factory reset on the Galaxy S7.
6. Navigate to the Calls app and select Contacts.
7. Tap the three dots in the top right.
8. Select Import from .vcf file.
Your contacts will now be manually imported onto the phone.
