How to set up video converter to hook up VGA tv and ASUS laptop

I have an ASUS laptop with an HDMI port, and want to connect it to an old TV with RCA inputs. Bought an Etekcity Video converter which is supposed to be PnP, but images not showing up on TV. Should I treat the laptop as a projector? Run as a dual monitor? If so, what channel do I use for the TV? Obviously, I'm a newbie at this. Need some step-by-step guidance.

Hi, to give you an answer, you must specify something, your laptop has a HDMI port, what is the input port you will be using with your TV? In the title you wrote VGA TV, and in the question you wrote, old TV with RCA inputs. Which input you will use?
