How to unlock memory card on canon

the memory card does not have a "a little handle" or "button" to slide over - - there is only the slot

Ah the slider came out? Just put some sticky tape over it and cover the hole.
The protection is actually in the reader, so if you cover the hole, the sensor in the camera thinks that the slider is there.
