Its a failed optical block. I bought the extended Warranty and had that part replaced twice. Its a very expensive repair (a new TV is cheaper). There was a class action suit on this and Sony offered a discount on a new TV. I'm not sure if the deal is still being offered though.

Your reply clearly explains the answer I received from Sony Support. They gave a number of lam steps of disconnecting and reconnecting cables and power cords to solve the problem. Their closing suggestion was to buy a new tv with all the new technology. No mention of a discount or new tv.
Needless to say I'll never by another product again. Thank you for your rely. You saved me a lot of needless searching for a repair
