Regular dvd won't work but special features disc does why

Try the following guide.
You will need a "Cleaning disc" something like this will do

The special features disc might work as it could be a single layered disc were most film DVD's will be dual layered

DVD mastering has changed over time so on later DVD and BD players there is a way to update the firmware in the player (via data disc, usb, or the net). Your built in probably doesn't have this ability so won't play some discs. You can check the TV manual or menus to see if there is any mention of this.
