I want to convert from cable and get free digital signals. with so many choices what do I need for signals...and how can I find out which signal can I pickup in my area,,,in metropolitan city

After you have checked out the website popatim posted check out reviews of OVA antennas on this site. An outdoor antenna is always better but if you can't use one there are many different alternatives. Maybe a neighbor has done this already and can suggest what worked for them.
There are dual tuner converter PVR boxes that will give you the option of recording and time shifting programming.
