Going through several HDMI to HDMI cables no longer resolves the intermittent signals . I was told I needed some type of adapter. What type , would i need if this is true. Not ready to purchase a new TV or monitor.

Solution
Try a different input on the TV. One input may be better especially if you use a long cable from the laptop.
Try a short cable to see if that works. If so then an HDMI amplifier might help

Set the laptop HDMI out as a second screen and set the resolution to match the TV (720 or 1080).
The order you turn things on can affect how the laptop and TV "handshake". If you already have the laptop booted when you switch to the input try it with the laptop off.
