What do you mean "you picked up an iPad"? Need some background info about the issue. Charging port could be bad, battery could be bad, screen or system board could be bad.

Even if the battery on it is completely dead, as soon as you plug it in it should show a battery icon on the screen. If it doesn't, even after hitting power button then what hang-the-9 said (bad port, battery, board or screen).

Does it generate any heat when plugged in?
